World Blood Donation Day Observed in Kabul

Ministry of Public Health of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan on Tuesday observed “the World Blood Donor Day” to raise awareness on the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors who are assisting in saving the lives of their needy compatriots.

In the ceremony held in central blood bank, Public Health Minister Dr. Suraya Dalil, WHO representative Dr. Ahmad Shadoul, a number of people including some officials of Afghan Government donated blood to the bank.

The theme of the 2012 World Blood Donor Day campaign was “every blood donor is a hero” which focuses on the idea that every one of us can become a hero by giving blood.

There are many silent and unsung heroes who save lives every day through their blood donations in Afghanistan and the theme also strongly encourages more people throughout the country to donate blood voluntarily and regularly.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Public Health Dr. Suraya Dalil said however the science and technology have been remarkably progressed in the world, but it couldn’t be able to discover or introduce any element instead of blood, so only donated blood of people can ensure safe life of the patients.

Blood donation is not harmful for the health, but it can be beneficial for the circulatory system and reduce the risk of heart diseases, Dr. Dalil added.

Donated blood is used in safe blood transfusions for women with pregnancy complications, severely anemic children suffering from malaria or malnutrition, accident victims bleeding profusely and several other surgical and cancer patients. People with blood disorders such as thalassemia, hemophilia and sickle cell disease need blood for regular transfusions and to make clothing factors.

Central Blood Bank of Afghanistan is a unique source which is ensuring safety Blood to the needy people and it has sub-departments in some provinces of the country and provides vital services to the patients.

According to figures of the Central Blood Bank, the number of volunteer Donors has been remarkably increasing in Afghanistan since 2002. During the last year including the provincial blood banks, totally 22,786 blood units were collected and transfused to the patients.

At same time the Minister of Public Health asked the further cooperation of the people with center blood bank by their blood donations, adding that the blood donating is very vital for treatment of the patients.

Likewise World Health Organization (WHO) representative to Afghanistan Dr. Ahmad Shadoul said that the observing of World Blood Donor Day is a good opportunity towards the collection of safety blood for needy patients.

He once again reiterated the WHO long-term commitments and continued cooperation with Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) saying,: “ I assure H. E. Dr. Suraya Dalil, Minister of Public Health that WHO is alongside of MoPH and support Afghanistan health sector to provide further and better health services in the country.

It is pertinent to mention, June 14th matches the birth of Karl Land Steiner who, for the first time, discovered Human Blood Group. He was appreciated for what he did and was awarded the Noble Prize. June 14th is nominated as the World Blood Donor Day to honor Karl Land Steiner.
